PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
It's finalized, we have received the contracts back from Johnny Preston and Rey Garza for this years' New Year's Eve Dance. This should prove to again be a great way to bring in the New Year. This year the Sandpipers will be sponsoring this dance alone as in previous years with the exception of last year's party. Mark your calendars and pass the word on to your dancing friends.
It is gratifying to see 23 student dancers continuing with the class. It is especially exciting to see them dancing with the support of so many Sandpiper Angels. The success of the class truly depends on this Angel participation. We thank you all for supporting the class and we appreciate and recognize the hard work that Class Managers Jerry Mendleson, Isana Seidcheck and Kathy Knight have done to keep the student enthusiasm continuing. The snacks provided weekly by the Class Support Committee of Susan and Mark Clark and Beth Abrahamson-Beck have been superior. We thank you all!
It has been obvious that the singles board has not been working well at our dances. Often there are six women listed on one side of the board and one man on the other side. This might be exciting for this one man, but it's very discouraging for the six women on the other side. It is great that some of the women have learned to dance the man's position. However we need a system that frees up more men to dance with these single women. They are also an important part of our club and they also want to be able to dance. Therefore we are instituting a new singles dance system. The single women should join a square and raise both hands, crossing their index fingers to indicate that a partner is needed. I will mention this at the beginning of our dances so that everyone will understand, including the caller. If you are a couple that is sitting out a tip, it would be great if the man, upon seeing the raised crossed fingers, would quickly fill in the place for a missing partner. If everyone participates, not just a few, most of the women will be able to dance and the men will have a chance to sit out occasionally also, not just a few of them. This practice will start in all PSDA club dances. However, so far, it isn't being used by other association clubs. If it's successful, I'm sure the practice will spread.
Also, it is time to think of who will be our new officers and committee chairs. They will be installed at our general meeting in June 2010. The Nominating Committee consists of Mike Harris, Dot Omens and Rand Johnston. I know everyone enjoys the fun part of being a member of the Sandpipers. However, the existence and success of the club depends on the participation of its members in filling these various jobs. Several years ago the Sandpipers Square Dance Club almost disbanded because no one was willing to be president. At that time Fred and Patti Jackson were fairly new members. However, in spite of their lack of experience with the club, they stepped in and were elected presidents and saved the club from disbanding. Not only did they fill the job, but also they energized the club and themselves and served for a record four years in that position. I hope that everyone will be open minded and consider any job that the nomination committee ask you to fill. The only way the Sandpipers can continue being the great club it is, is to have good membership support. Please say yes when asked to fill a position, better yet, contact a Nominating Committee member and volunteer for a position.

VALENTINE'S DAY DANCE
Where were the Sandpipers for our Valentine's Day Dance? Phil Farmer called a fun dance in spite of having only four squares on the floor. Thanks to our greeters Dot and Gilbert Omens and our hosts Beth Abramson-Beck and Kathy Knight who provided home made goodies for refreshments. We did have some Sandpipers attending the Yuma, AZ square dance festival that weekend, but what happened to the rest of the Sandpipers? We only have one Sandpiper dance a month. Everyone should make a special effort to support our own dances. Mark your calendars for our St Patrick's Day Dance on March 13, 2010 with Andy Allemao and Regina Aubrey.
SPECIAL VISITATION AWARD
Betty Lou Sanderson, long time member of the Sandpipers Square Dance Club, received a special recognition plaque at our “Happy Valentine's Day Dance for attending 325 visitations. This is a feat accomplished by very few square dancers. Additionally she attends almost every Sandpiper's student class as an Angel. She is a special Angel that has even learned to dance the man's position in the class and at the PSDA student dances. Additionally, she is often the driver for several other single women driving them all to the PSDA dances. It's so great to have such a dedicated dancer in our club. Congratulations, Betty Lou!
