PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
We had accumulated (won) 11 banners of the Whirlaways Square Dance Club. At several recent Whirlaway dances we had enough Sandpipers in attendance to retrieve any banner that the Whirlaways might have had. Unfortunately, they had none. I felt that it was time to take strong action, to make a memorable statement. I took the 11 Whirlaway banners that we had accumulated to the Whirlaway's “Spin the Top” dance and displayed them in the front of the hall next to the stage, and challenged the Whirlaways to come and get their banners back.
I then contacted Varia and Donna, presidents of the Whirlaways and made this proposition. If they attended our dance with 12 members, I would give them two of their banners instead of one, and one of ours (which is normal for 12 attendees). I also said that if they had 24 people attending I would give them four of their banners back instead of two, and two of our banners. To everyone's amazement, including the Whirlaway presidents, they came with 30 members. For years the Whirlaways have said that they could not get their members to visit. Their new presidents, Varia and Donna, just drove a stake into that notion.
To add icing to the cake, the Ocean Wavers also attended our dance with 13 members. This earned them the normal of one of their banners (we have three) and one of ours. For the last several months, we have had enough members attending their dances to retrieve one of our banners, but they also didn't have one to retrieve. We had 11 squares on the floor at our St. Patrick's Dance. We seldom have that many people attending.
I mention this to point out the importance of visitations. No club, including ours, has enough members to pay for their dances. It costs us between $500 and $600 to put on a dance. We would loose money on all of our dances if it weren't for the visitors. Not only should we treat them like the gold that they are but we also have to return the “gold” by visiting their dances. Square dancers are a different breed of people. In most cases, they are people that you would like to include in your circle of friends. That can be accomplished only by attending other club dances. Please help our club out by visiting other clubs!
For those who attended the memorial service of Bob Fisher, it was obvious that square dancers truly do support their fellow dancers. The church was full of square dancers. The memorial testimonials were impressive. I have seen this support often in my years of square dancing. Square dancing is much more than just some people square dancing. It's more like very close friends interacting together, almost like family. We are all fortunate that we are part of the Square Dance Family. I'm sure that none of us realized that fact when we first decided to learn square dancing. We are truly a lucky group of people!

SANDPIPER'S ST PATRICK'S DAY DANCE
There was a huge turnout for the Sandpiper's St Patrick's Day Dance on Saturday night, March 13, 2010. Dancers filled the floor with Irish Green the predominant theme. President Chuck Ades had issued challenges to some of the other clubs in the PSDA to visit the Sandpipers. Chuck told the Whirlaway Presidents that he would give them four of their club banners if they brought at least two squares. Well, the Whirlaways brought 30 dancers to the dance and the Ocean Wavers brought 15 dancers to the dance.
Caller Andy Allemao called a high energy fun dance for the over one-hundred dancers who attended with Radka Sanderman providing a wonderful Round Dance program.

WHIRLAWAYS HALL OF FAME DANCE APRIL 23, 2010
Patti and Fred Jackson have been selected to be this years Sandpiper's Hall of Fame Couple. Patti and Fred graduated from the Sandpiper's square dance classes in February, 2002 and attended their first Jamboree by the Sea a few days later. They remember happily dancing in the Mainstream Hall to a variety of callers until Sandpiper's Presidents Jim and Catherine Bowen literally dragged them into the Plus Hall for a tip. They remember that the floor was crowded with dancers. With knees shaking they danced the tip. Everything was happening so fast. They thanked everyone in the square and then retreated back to the Mainstream Hall.
In June 2002 Fred and Patti became the Sandpiper Secretary and the very next year they were elected the Sandpiper Presidents, a position they held for four years. During that time the Sandpiper membership grew from about 63 to almost 90. They have continued to be members of the Sandpiper Board of Directors as Immediate Past Presidents and currently as Newsletter Editor. Almost every Thursday night for the past eight years, they can be found angeling the Sandpiper square dance class.
Fred and Patti are members of the advanced club Double SD's where for the last two years they have been on the Board of Directors as Secretary. They are also members of the Advanced and Challenge Club, Magic Squares and they are members of the caller club, Scoot'n Weavers. They dance all square dance levels through C-1 and they are level four plus Round Dancers. They continue to dance almost every night and attend many National and State Square Dance Conventions and weekend square dance festivals. They often travel and almost always visit local square dance club dances in the area.
Congratulations Patti and Fred for being selected the Sandpiper Hall of Fame Couple for 2010!

2ND VICE-PRESIDENTS AND CLASS MANAGERS JERRY MENDELSON AND ISANA SEIDCHECK
Our class, like all good things, is growing. Some current and former Sandpipers have signed up for a refresher at the plus level. We welcome all comers. We had a great time in Bakersfield with about 1200 other dancers. They had three halls were you could dance at different levels from mainstream to challenge or round dance until it was time to shop at the numerous vendors. We had a great time, saw many friends and made some new ones. The Ramblin' Rogues from Orange CA did something different, one tip they danced all girls and all boys in separate squares. That was fun to watch.
April 1st our class will car pool from the Encinitas Community Center at 6:15 PM to the Ocean Wavers class in Vista for a class outing and dance instead of the usual place.
We have two ribbons for California State Convention in Fresno, CA and two ribbons for National's. We would like $25.00 for the 2 State ribbons and $30 for the two National's. Call (760) 436-7718 or (760) 822-8759.
WALTRAUT SCHUMANN
Sandpiper, Waltraut Schumann recently returned from attending the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. She noted that she also attended the opening ceremonies of the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany where American Jesse Owens won four gold medals in running and the long jump. Waltraut was born in Austria and learned to ski at an early age. She was married to an optometrist and had three children when the Second World War occurred. She remembers hiding in the basement with her children while bombs dropped all around. Her building was hit by a bomb. She took her children and relocated to the mountains to get away from the war. Unfortunately, she never heard from her husband again. She looked for him, but he was missing and finally declared deceased. She immigrated to America in 1950 and for a time lived and worked on her uncle's chicken ranch in New Jersey. She was an avid skier, skiing at Mammoth Mountain, Whistler and Jackson Hole until as recently as three years ago at the age of 88. She just returned from a doctor's visit who pronounced her in perfect health. She herself says that she is actually getting younger thanks to square dancing. She is truly an amazing woman.
