PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
I am sure that no one realizes that when they sign up for a beginning square dance class how much it will potentially change their lives. You think that it's like any other class you might sign up for, like a math class or even a ballroom dancing class. Square dancing offers much more than just learning how to dance. It offers that, plus an infinite supply of friends. Every time that you get into a square you are becoming acquainted with a new group of people. To begin with it is your classmates and the angels that attend the class to help you to learn square dancing. As soon as you are admitted into a club you meet another group of potential “friends”. Then as you branch out into going to other club dances, you begin to realize the large group of potential friends that you are exposed to. It takes some time as a participating member of a club before you begin to appreciate how deeply this friendship runs. It takes actually witnessing the help and support afforded to you or another member when the need presents itself. It is truly the type of support that you would expect from your own family. However, this family type of support is also found among the square dance environment. It really becomes obvious when you attend a memorial service of a long time square dancer. Usually, ½ to as much as ¾ of those attending a memorial service for a square dancer will be square dancers.
I have noticed that many of our new members and even some of our older members aren't giving this positive “miracle” a chance to work. There are many of our members that I don't see attending even our club dances. In order to experience this “miracle” you have to attend our own dances. Then later you can progress to other club dances. It took me many years to actually experience this “miracle”. The Sandpipers use to dance twice a month. We didn't get enough people attending our dances so it was decided to start having our dance only once a month. I was very much opposed to only dancing once a month. I had not yet realized that actually there are several dances each week given by clubs of our own Palomar Square Dance Association. Then there are also the San Diego Square Dance Association whose clubs are not too far away. There are also Clubs to the north and south of us. Eventually, you can then progress to various Square Dance festivals.
When you go to a festival and recognize and mix with dancers that you have danced with at other occasions, you will know that you are finally receiving the blessing of the Square Dance Family. I hope that you all will eventually experience the great feeling of really belonging to the square dance family! I hope to see all of you who can physically dance at the many dances that are offered by clubs of the PSDA and other associations. At the least, I would hope that you would attend our own dances.
Also remember to continue looking for potential new students for our class dance that starts on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 7 PM. Our goal this year is to have at least 60 people show up during the first two classes. If a person can't make it to the September 9th class dance they can still come to the Thursday the September 16th class dance. Every attendee's first class with us, whether it is the 9th or the 16th,is free. If they don't want to continue, they have at least experienced an enjoyable evening with Jim Randall calling. If everyone gets only one person, we will have over 100 people showing up

SANDPIPER NEW DANCER DANCE AUGUST 14, 2010, 3:30 PM
At the Sandpipers Board Meeting it was decided that our New Dancer's Dance on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Saint James Parish Hall at 3:30 PM will be free to all Sandpipers. Our regular dance will be following at the regular time and is also free to all Sandpipers who have paid their dues: 7:00 PM rounds and 7:30 PM squares. This New Dancer Dance is open to all other clubs (They have to pay $5). Jim Randall is calling the New Dancer Dance, David/Dawn Mee are calling and cueing the regular dance.
Everyone is invited to gather at the Panda Express, 689 Lomas Santa Fe in Solana Beach for dinner between the two dances.
This is an excellent opportunity for our new members and "rusty" members to improve their skills.
SANDPIPERS INDEPENDENCE DAY/ICE CREAM SOCIAL DANCE

On Saturday, July 10, 2010 the Sandpipers held their dance at the St James Parish Hall. However, there was an ominous beginning to the dance when we found we were locked out of the hall. Presidents Chuck and Joan Ades were on their cell phones calling the emergency numbers trying to locate someone who could open the hall as dancers began congregating in the parking lot. Square dancers are a patient group. Everyone got out of their cars and began visiting with each other. No one appeared to be upset about the delay of the dance. Bill Hale temporarily set up on the patio and cued a round before the hall was open. When the hall was opened, everyone, including the guests, pitched in to help set up the tables and set out the chairs. The whole hall was set up in a record time of ten minutes. Pat Carnathan called a great dance and the hall was filled with eleven squares making it one the most attended dances of the year. Thanks to the hosts working in the kitchen, Dot and Gilbert Omens and Patti and Fred Jackson.

DEMONSTRATIONS
We sure were busy with demonstrations in May 2010.
Palmquist Elementary School in Oceanside, was the location of our demonstration May 12, 2010. Jim Randall called for us. Thank you to the following Sandpipers for participating.Catherine and Jim Bowen, Sandy and Mike Harris, Lucille Brown, Becky Morris(Abramson), Debby Gaarde, George Bramblett, John Gordon, and Fred Jackson.
Paul Ecke Elementary School in Leucadia. For four Fridays the fourth graders participated in Square Dance classes. Jim Randall called and a group of Sandpipers helped out. The culmination was a Square Dance involving the students, parents and grandparents on the school's California Days, June 27, 2010. The kids were fantastic. Fourth graders learn very quickly. It was great fun nurturing our future dancers. This is our square dancing community and we hope to involve some of the teachers, parents and grandparents in our classes in September 2010. The following Sandpipers participated at Paul Ecke: Kathy Knight, Becky Morris, Sandy and Mike Harris, John Gordon, John and Renny Dowling, Jerry Mendelson, Isana Seidcheck, Elizabeth Allen, and Catherine and Jim Bowen. Jim Randal's calling was fantastic. Thank you everyone for setting aside your busy schedules and participating. This is our gift to the community.
BOARD MEETING
The next board meeting will be Monday, August 16, 2010 at 7 PM at home of Dot and Gilbert Omens, 113 Solace Court, Encinitas, CA 92024. All Sandpipers are encouraged to attend the board meetings. Please call Dot or Gilbert at 760-943-8311 if you plan to attend.
Please let me know if you can host a BOARD MEETING. You don't have to be a board member to host a board meeting. If you have a home where we can squeeze in about 20 people, we can bring extra chairs, you can host a board meeting. This might be one way you can contribute to the functioning of the Sandpipers. Call Renny Dowling at 760-721-9745.
SUMMER PICNICS
We are planning to have picnics every week all summer long. We are so fortunate to live in this wonderful area so we will try to get out and enjoy it. The kick-off picnic will be on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 5 pm in the Oceanside Harbor. John and Renny Dowling will host. Maybe the following week it will be different location hosted by another Sandpiper. Contact: Renny Dowling 760-721-9745
SANDPIPER MARY MORRIS CELEBRATES HER 95TH BIRTHDAY
Long time Sandpiper Mary Morris celebrated her 95th birthday at a party hosted by her and her daughter and son-in-law at their home in Encinitas, on Sunday, July 25, 2010. A few invited Sandpipers attended along with members of the Italian Club and her family. Everyone was told wear a hat. A live Italian band and singer performed appropriate theme songs from Italy. A lavish array of Italian food continued throughout the party, culminating in Caesar Salad and barbecued Italian sausage at the dinner hour. Long time Sandpiper Gene Henry who has been in poor health of late also attended. Congratulations to Mary and Happy Birthday!
SANDPIPERS DANIE AND WAYNE
Travelling Sandpipers Danie and Wayne Warren-Angelucci are home from a two-year hiatus from square dancing. They have been on a world-wide odyssey, including SCUBA diving off Indonesia and Australia and some glider flying in New Zealand. They recently attended a square dance workshop and were amazed that after all this time, they could still square dance. We have all joked about how square dancing is like riding a bicycle; you never forget how. At least for Danie and Wayne, it's true. Welcome back and we hope to see them in a square. We are told that they are off for more world-wide travelling later this year.
