PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
Holiday Wishes - and a few Reminders
The holiday season is the busiest time of the year for most of us, a time of fun, family and friends. But also a time when calendars get packed and schedules get hectic.
During this happy time, we hope you still find time to dance. We are extending visitation credit to an expanded list of area dances during the month of December 2011 in the hopes that you can find one that fits your schedule. It is a great time to get out and share the holiday spirit with members of other clubs.
Most important, we hope you have put our December 10, 2011 Holiday Benefit Dance on your calendar in ink. Not only is it a great time to square up with your fellow Sandpipers, it is preceded by a fabulous pot luck dinner (Sandpipers pot lucks are always fabulous!), which itself is preceded by a brief General Meeting.
We hope everybody makes an extra effort to come for the General Meeting that starts at 5:30 p.m. The agenda is very brief, with only a couple items that require a full club vote, but it is an opportunity to get an overview of your club's activities and future plans.
One important item to be introduced and discussed at the General Meeting is our new Hospitality Program. It seems that every year our lives get more and more fast paced and busy, and every year it has become harder and harder to recruit and organize volunteers to help host our dances. The new plan developed by the Hospitality Committee addresses this in a very simple fashion. No longer will we require two couples to bring all the food, set up, serve during the dance, and clean up at the end for each dance. Instead, we will spread the responsibility. We have divided our roster in half alphabetically, and will alternate asking one half of the membership to bring a dish to share if they are attending that dance. It is a system that works well for other clubs and has worked well for us when we host PSDA dances or hold pie night. The set-up, maintenance of the snack table, and tear down at the end of the dance will be three separate functions, with one couple designated to help with each function.
Each club member will be asked to do one thing during the year, only once during the year. To get this started, the Hospitality Committee has taken our membership list and assigned each person one task. If you don't like your duty (you can't arrive early, but could help at the end) or can't make the date requested, just trade with someone. The assignment list is attached to this newsletter. Hopefully, once you see your one-time “assignment,” you will agree that it is a very simple and manageable process.
We look forward to seeing you at the General Meeting, and welcome your input on this or any other club issues or activities. Most important, we look forward to seeing you in a square!
Happy Holidays! Nancy and Larry
POINSETTIA TOUR
There was a great turnout of Sandpipers and guests for the A&G Nursery tour hosted by Chuck and Joan Ades on November 20, with the Ocean Wavers having so many present that they were asking if they could get a banner back! The tour was held in conjunction with the Poinsettia Sale which Chuck graciously set up to benefit the Sandpipers.
The tour was very interesting and the setting spectacular -- some people took pictures to use on holiday cards! The tour was conducted inside the greenhouses and although it rained a little, we kept dry with a plastic roof over our heads.
The newly developed hybrid Poinsettia should not be in rain or full sun. You may plant in a sunny location after holidays. In March cut back so it will bloom for future winter holidays. Chuck Ades devoted over 50 years to growing the best flowers in the world. The Paul Ecke Nursery has developed Poinsettia varieties that do not drop leaves. Most varieties however, will not thrive in gardens after initial holiday in-home displays. It is a privilege to know this dedicated man and a joy to take his tour and lecture about the history and future of the domestic flower industry. Thank you Chuck and Joan for the wonderful tour.
DECEMBER 10, 2011 HOLIDAY BENEFIT DANCE
Our December 10 dance is our annual “Holiday Benefit” so if you can please bring an unwrapped toy to donate to St. James. Our caller is Rod Shuping, and the cuer is Rey Garza. This is also our club General Meeting, so we hope all Sandpipers can attend. The very brief meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m., followed by a pot luck dinner. Please come a little early, and bring a dish to share for the pot luck and holiday cookies for the dance.
GENERAL MEETING DECEMBER 10, 2011
Our semi-annual Sandpiper General Meeting will precede our Holiday Benefit Dance on December 10, 2011. The meeting starts at 5:30 PM and will be very brief, but we need club approval on bylaws changes to identify documents that need to be permanently retained for tax purposes, and an overview and explanation of our new hosting procedures will be given. Our new calendar year budget for 2012 will also be presented. The meeting will be immediately followed by a pot luck dinner (always great when the Sandpipers do it) so please come early and bring a dish to share.
INDIO SQUARE DANCE FESTIVAL 2011
The Sandpipers were well represented at the RIVCO dance festival in Indio November 10-13, 2011with a large contingent in both the Plus and Advanced halls. It was especially fun to have new dancers Linda Perry and Donna Arnicar jump right in to the big event and have the time of their lives. There is nothing like dancing with 50 or 60 squares of your closest friends on the floor at the same time.

Many Sandpipers gathered for an informal Bring Your Own Lunch on Saturday and chatted, munched, and browsed through some of the old Sandpiper History books provided by Richard Anderson. Other Sandpipers attending the festival were Chuck and Joan Ades, John and Renny Dowling, Karion and Doris Fitzpatrick, Jim and Catherine Bowen, Dot and Gilbert Omens, Frank and Nanette Caldararo, Bob and Elaine Lonnegren, Patti and Fred Jackson and Loretta Martinez. A real treat was having recent Sandpipers Gerry Mendelson and Isana Seidcheck, who have moved to Buckeye, AZ, and Pat and Glenn Hornberger, who now live in Prescott, AZ, join us as “ex-officio” Sandpipers -- name badges and all! - as well as “part-timers” Harry and Dale Axcell.
BOARD MEETING JANUARY 16, 2012
Our next Board Meeting will be at 7 PM Monday, January 16,2012 at Chuck and Joan Ades' house, 1041 Passiflora Place, Leucadia, 92024. Board meetings are open to any club member who wishes to attend. All attendees, including Board members, are asked to RSVP to the Ades so they know how many to prepare for (760-753-6822).

VISITATIONS WRANGLER HUSTLER RUSTER DANCE
December is a busy month, and we know your calendar is already full, so we are designating several dances as Visitations this month to give you a choice. Several Sandpipers are already planning to attend each of these dances, so hopefully you can join us at one or more and help us spread Sandpiper cheer. At any dance you attend, please promote the New Year's Eve Dance…we don't want anyone to miss out because they wait too long to sign up.

CLUB OUTFITS NEEDED
In the past couple of months we have had several club outfits made available by former Sandpipers who moved out of the area, and they have been eagerly snapped up by current members. But we need more! We had more people wanting the outfits than we had outfits. If you know of any Sandpipers who have quit dancing, for health reasons or otherwise, please ask them if they would be willing to recycle their outfits. Please let Larry & Nancy Anderson know (858-674-6886, larrya1994@aol.com), and they will pass the word or put them into our next recycle sale. Thanks!
SUNSHINE
Our condolences to Joan and Terry Thompson. Joan's mother Kitty (Kate) passed away on November 7, 2011. Her husband Milt was active in the Sandpipers up until a few years ago.
PHOTOBUCKET
We have set up a Photo Bucket account to post all the wonderful pictures that Richard Anderson has been taking. Check it out at www.photobucket.com/SandpipersPhoto. Be sure to look through the different albums. More photos are uploaded weekly. If you have any photos to include, please send them to Larry Anderson or Deb Gaarde to upload. Thanks for all you do to increase the strength of our Club.
NEW YEAR'S EVE DANCE PARTY
As if spending New Year's Eve with 160 of your closest friends and wonderful food, dancing and music isn't enough, our caller is Johnny Preston, a top “national” caller, always great fun, and a real treat to have locally. And for all you round dancers, no one is better than our cuer Rey Garza. The number of attendees is limited, and tickets sell out fast, so if you haven't already gotten yours, please contact Jim or Catherine Bowen, 760-431-0252.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you have a special interest or a skill you can contribute to help further square dancing and the Sandpipers, please let us know. We can always use a little help, and, as you know, many hands make the work go easier. Two areas we could use help in are:
Facebook: We'd still like to move into the current century and use Facebook as a way of promoting the club and square dancing and another way to share information and photos with each other. If you are proficient with Facebook, or would like to get to know it better, please let us know - we'd love to have a Facebook page set up and maintained for the club.
History Scrap Book - Are you a scrap-booking enthusiast? Do you have a knack for pasting pictures, captions and mementos into a memory book? We need someone to serve as the club Historian to use the photos provided by club photographer Richard Anderson and others along with newsletters, flyers, etc, to maintain a history of our club activities.
Game Night Coordinator -Many of our members have enjoyed Game Night in the past, and several are willing to host one of the monthly nights, but we need someone to serve as overall coordinator to sign up the hosts and keep the calendar. The coordinator doesn't have to host, just help organize the schedule and sign people up. Is this your “calling?”
