PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
Looking Forward to a Great New Year!
It's hard to believe that it is already “next year.” It seems that we have just gotten used to writing 2011 and now it is 2012!
Time seems to just fly by. And, if you are like us - and it seems most Sandpipers that we talk to are - we are busier than ever. And as our calendar fills up, we too often find ourselves saying “oh no, is that this weekend?” So we thought we'd offer some suggestions and reminders for a fun new year that you can pencil in on your calendar now, so you have a reminder when you are planning your busy schedule.
Two special events coming up are the PSDA Anniversary Dance on January 28 (see visitations) and our own Sandpipers 39 th Anniversary Dance on April 14. The Sandpipers dance on the second Saturday of every month except November, when we are dark. We also usually plan several visitations to other clubs each month, so there are multiple opportunities to dance. You can always check details, such as caller & cuer, theme, time & location on our website www.sandpiperssquaredanceclub.org.
Another recurring event you might want to attend is the student-level dance sponsored by the PSDA on the second Sunday of most months, usually from 6:30 to 8:45 in the American Legion Hall in Escondido. This is a great way to encourage new dancers and also a fun way for those feeling a little “rusty” to get some floor time. You can stay tuned in to these dances and other Palomar Square Dance Association activities at www.palomarsda.org. This is also a good source of info about other PSDA club dances.
A subscription to the bi-monthly Palostar ($12 per year; 760-724-2262, palostar@palomarsda.org) is a great way to keep up on all area square dance activities.
If you have never attended a weekend square dance festival, you are missing a real treat. Workshops and programs run all day long, usually culminating in a great dance each night. You can dance your feet off if you want, or pick and choose throughout the event. Either way, you will dance to great callers, meet wonderful people from all around, and come away invigorated and excited about square dancing. Two Festivals coming up early in the year within a reasonable driving distance are the Yuma Square Dance Festival February 10-12 ( www.ysrda.weebly.com/2012-festival) and the Bakersfield Fiesta March 16-18 ( www.bakersfieldfiesta.com).
Whatever you are able to fit into your busy schedule, we look forward to joining you in a square in 2012!

SANDPIPER NEW YEAR'S EVE DANCE PARTY 2011
The Sandpipers and friends kicked off the New Year with the 14th annual New Year's Eve Dance Party. Johnny Preston called and Rey and Sherry Garza cued over 100 dancers at the St James Parish Hall.
Thanks to Jim and Catherine Bowen who again Chaired the Dance Committee.
Thanks to Hospitality Chair Carol Burks who helped organize the impressive array of food and drink that was served throughout the evening by Sandpiper volunteers.
Thanks to all of those who helped decorate, set-up, prepare and serve the goodies and for those who cleaned-up and put all the table and chairs away. Special thanks to Debby and Bill Gaarde for providing and maintaining the chocolate fountain, which was immensely popular. The dance was a huge success. Dancers from eleven different clubs were present, as well as long-distance guests Bob Mackie and Louise Parker, down from Canada, and Gary and Ellie Kramer from San Jose. To cap off the evening, Johnny Preston counted down to the New Year and everyone toasted the New Year with glasses of sparkling cider.

GENERAL MEETING OF DECEMBER 10, 2011
At our semi-annual General Meeting held prior to the December dance, members:
Approved a balanced budget for 2012 (initiating our new calendar year budgeting).
Approved bylaws changes identifying specific documents required to be maintained permanently for tax purposes.
Were presented with the new Hospitality plan which changes responsibility for refreshments from two couples per dance to any member attending whose name falls within a designated half of the alphabet for that dance, and splits the “hosting” responsibilities into three segments, with each club member assigned one task one time during the year.
SQUARE DANCING BAVARIAN STYLE
By Tim and Jan Motley
While we were attending a dance in Escondido early last October, the caller happened to mention his start with square dancing years before in Germany. This caught our attention as we had just graduated as Sandpipers and were trying to attend as many dances as possible. We had a trip coming up in late October 2011, to spend some time in Germany. The caller strongly encouraged us to find a club there and go dancing. Since we'd never been to Germany, much less been square dancing there, we turned to Google. Turns out, we found almost 10 square dancing clubs, just in Munich, where we were to be visiting.
Most of the clubs had websites with contact information, which we took advantage of and soon were corresponding with several clubs there. As it turned out, a dance was being held on the Friday night we were there hosted by the Munich Roadrunners. We came into contact with some Roadrunners who offered to pick us up and take us to the dance, as it wasn't easily accessible by public transportation.
We arrived at the pre-arranged time and location and met a lovely couple, Claudia and Hans Burger. We hopped in their car and soon arrived on an old WWII era German military medical complex. We learned that the German government had turned it over to various clubs, in exchange for the clubs doing all the maintenance and upkeep. We went in and found a nice dance floor, and a great group of friendly dancers. All the calls were in English, which is the universal square dance language, but there were some interesting variations on some of the moves we'd learned.
It was graduation night for their latest group of students who each received their club badges and name tags that night. Everyone was very enthusiastic and encouraging to the new students, and we remembered how it felt since we were there just a few months before. The dancing was fun, and there were all ages represented. Most of the discussions were in German, but nearly everyone there spoke English so it was easy for us to strike up conversations.
All too soon, the dancing drew to a close and we said our good-byes. The Roadrunners gave us tags for our badges as souvenirs and our hosts took us back to our hotel. We encouraged them to come and visit San Diego and dance with us here. It was a great night, and we were so glad that we had found our way out for a night of Bavarian square dancing.
Here's the link to the Munich Roadrunners for your next trip to Germany; tell them we said “hi” and we hope you have as much fun as we did: http://www.munich-roadrunners.de.
CLASS DANCE PARTY
Class will resume on January 5, 2012 after a layoff over the holidays, with a Dance Party at Class. We want to make this a fun activity for our students and would appreciate as many angels as possible to come. This is a great opportunity for those who are feeling a little rusty to get their feet wet with a little floor time at the current class level. Please come at 7 PM on Thursday at the Encinitas Community Center.

MARY MORRIS JULY 26, 1915 TO DECEMBER 7, 2011
Long time Sandpiper Mary Morris passed away suddenly from a stroke on December 7, 2011. She had attended the Sandpiper Square Dance Class just three weeks before her passing and danced a tip. Earlier that day she had travelled to Valley Center to dance with the Valley Center Promenaders. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion, square and round dance partner, Gene Henry who passed away on September 29, 2010. He is pictured behind Mary in this 2006 photo. In addition to being members of the Sandpipers Square Dance Club, Gene and Mary were also members of the Encinitas Italian Club. She is survived by her daughter Linda Temko, her husband Ron and their three children David, Perri and Rachel and her son Wayne Morris and his wife Tooni of Marin County, CA.
A Celebration of Life for Mary is planned for 11 AM, Saturday, January 28, 2012, at St John Parish, 1001 Encinitas Blvd, Encinitas, CA. Contact Linda Temko at: lindatemko@gmail.com.
