PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
We are coming to the close of another successful year for the Sandpipers. Most members seem to be enthusiastically supporting the club and especially our new class. We are all looking forward to adding the class members to our membership. Their enthusiasm will only add to the excitement of our club.
Our potluck before the general meeting was well attended and also by some of our students. The food was good as always and the meeting short. The toy drive was also successful and appreciated by the church. Rod Shuping did a good job of calling. It was great having Peter Gomez here all the way from Colorado. It was nice that his “new” bride, Chama attended also. It is always a pleasure watching her round dance. She has such good technique and grace.
Don't forget our New Year's Eve dance. This year's dance is presented in conjunction with the Circulators from San Diego. About 140 dancers will be joining us for the bringing in of the New Year. We have a talented International caller, Gary Shoemake calling and our own local exciting Rey Garza cueing. There will be “heavy” hors d'oeuvres all evening, culminating with a toast to the New Year 2010.
January 2010 starts us off with a busy schedule with our dance on January 9, 2010 with Cliff Simpson calling and Rey Garza cueing at our “Wild West” dance (no loaded guns allowed). This is followed with a PSDA student dance on Sunday, January 10, 2010. We would like to see good Sandpiper support for our students at this dance. Therefore we are making it a visitation. Other visitations for the month are Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Whirlaways with Ken Bower calling and Rey Garza cueing, Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Wranglers with Phil farmer calling and Dave Drapee cueing.
The PSDA Anniversary Dance on Saturday, January 30, 2010 has another international caller, Tony Oxendine, and Shirley Ivins cueing. We are hosting this dance. The PSDA will be providing two cakes. Our club members should bring finger food snacks and help with the serving. We should have a good attendance at this dance with a well known caller like Tony.
Wishing you all a Happy Holiday season. I hope yours was enjoyable. See you on the dance floor.

HOLIDAY BENEFIT AND ST JAMES TOY DRIVE DANCE
We had a good turn out for our Holiday Benefit and St James Toy Drive Dance on Saturday, December 12, 2009. Rod Shuping called a fun dance with student level tips at the beginning and cuer Peter Gomez was back from Colorado with his new wife and dance partner, Chama.
It was a busy night for the Sandpipers as Presidents Chuck and Joan Ades presided over the semi-annual General Meeting, followed by the potluck dinner, clean up and then, set up for the dance. Thanks to all the Sandpipers who helped set up the dinner. Thanks to everyone who brought a toy for the toy drive and all the Christmas Cookies and other goodies.
It was good to see long time Sandpiper Leonard Seagle back on the dance floor after his recent hip replacement. Pictured here are Leonard and Doris Garrison.

GAME NIGHT
The weather outside was stormy, but Kathy's house was warm, filled with fun and laughter. About 23 Sandpipers enjoyed a wonderful, lighthearted evening eating, drinking, laughing and playing OUTBURST. Kathy divided the group into three teams, which then competed in coming up with the most words. Ice-cheating is not a word, Leo. Team 3 was the winner by a narrow margin. The evening concluded with Kathy, our wonderful hostess, playing the piano.
Thank you Kathy for hosting this event.
Those attending were: Becky Morris, Frank Wallner, Ann Fleming, Adrienne Cooper-Gordon, Irene Brummett, Renate Hausmann, Leo and Barbara Benavidez, Elizabeth Allen and Don Mohr, Loren and Barbara Miller, Chuck and Joan Ades, Karion and Doris Fritzpatrick, Gilbert and Dot Omens, John and Renny Dowling, Jerry Mendelson and Isana Seidcheck.
NEXT GAME NIGHT
Monday, February 1, 2010 will be at the Dowlings at 7 PM. Game Night is usually on the first Monday of the month. There is no game night in January. Put it on your calendar and don't miss out on the fun. RSVPs are always appreciated. Please contact Renny Dowling - email : jdow1243@aol.com or 760-721-9745.
POINSETTIA SALE
Thank you Sandpipers for participating in this colorful fundraiser. Our Club made over $150 for the general fund. The folks we spoke to are delighted with the plants.
CAN COLLECTING
Since collecting the cans and bottles at the Thursday night class from September to December, we made about $32. John will not be able to collect the cans anymore, so we are looking for someone to continue the recycling program. If you are attending the Thursday night class and are willing to take the cans and bottles to a recycling center please contact President Chuck Ades.
DECEMBER 2009 GENERAL MEETING and POTLUCK
We sure know how to cook and eat. More than 40 Sandpipers sat down to a delicious dinner. It was truly a groaning board, lots of salads and main dishes. The left-over pies provided a tasty ending to the meal. Then we continued with Holiday Cookies during the dance. Sure glad that we all danced a lot to use up the calories. Thank you to everyone for contributing so bountifully. The next General Meeting will be in the Ades' garden in June. All members are encourages to attend these general meetings. In June we hope to have a lot of the NEW members (currently class members) attend.
JANUARY 2010 BOARD MEETING
Next board meeting is Monday, January 18 ,2010 at 7 PM at Kathy Knight's home. Please email or call Kathy at catalinakathy@yahoo.com 760-632-0985 to RSVP, or if you need directions.
