PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
It was a very exciting day for the Sandpipers on May 13, 2010. We had 27 class members receive their completion papers for the Student Class being held at the Encinitas Community Center. Four of these graduates were already members of the Sandpipers Square Dance Club. They wanted to attend the class to get a “brush up” on their dancing proficiency. Two were previous Sandpipers that had dropped out several years ago, but decided that they missed square dancing and wanted to again benefit from the fun of square dancing. At the club's board meeting on May 17, 2010, the board unanimously voted to extend a welcome to the 23 new graduates, that weren't already Sandpipers, to join the club. This will bring the club membership to over 100 active members. This is a long sought membership milestone for the Sandpipers. Be sure that you welcome these new members into the club at our General Meeting to be held on June 27, 2010 at our home and garden, and also on the dance floor. Remember that we were all new dancers at one time. Be patient and helpful with them on the dance floor. They are all anxious to become seasoned dancers.
Our next goal has to be to recruit an even bigger group of new students for the class that starts on September 9, 2010. The class is the “life blood” of the club. We need between 26 and 27 students to have enough income to support the class. Otherwise, we have to dig into our treasury to support the class. Our previous two years we had to lay out between $1200 and $1600 to support the class. For this class we had 53 potential class members show up for this class. In the end it dwindled down to only 21 students, which is about normal. We always lose about half of the potential students. We were able to maintain our 27 by having a previous dancer couple join the class and some of our own members that wanted to have a brush up, also, joining the class. Otherwise we would have had to subsidize the class. Therefore, our goal this year should be to have 60 people show up for the class on Thursday September 9, 2010. This will require the hard work of everyone. The new graduates will have many friends that they have not talked to before about square dancing. The more seasoned dancers will have to work harder at this task. However, I, personally, have already gotten three positive responses from people I just met or that I haven't talked square dancing to before. We still have some calling cards left that have had the correct date written in. We have enough that each person can have five to carry in their wallet or purse. We will pass these out at the General Meeting. I find it is a good reminder if you carry them at all times. You never know when you will meet a potential class prospective.
Our annual June General Meeting will be held at our home and garden at 3 PM. I will have a self-guiding tour available for all who want to learn more about the garden and it's plants. The Meeting will begin at 4 PM, followed by the barbecue at about 5. Everyone should bring a side dish to share and something to barbecue. We will furnish ice cream sundaes. We will also have shuffleboard, pool table and bocce ball available for your pleasure. It should be an enjoyable evening. I promise to keep the meeting “short” and the fun “long”.

FLOWER POWER DANCE
On Saturday, May 8, 2010 the Sandpipers had their “Flower Power” Dance. Caller Rick Hampton travelled all the way from Visalia, CA and called a great dance to a modest crowd of dancers that consisted of some “flower children” pictured below. Cuer Peter Gomez travelled all the way from Colorado with his wife and dance partner Chama to cue the round dancers. Hosts Marilyn and Vince Pileggi and Karen and Bob Dorney provided a wonderful array of refreshments and Ann Fleming and Frank Wallner provided the welcoming hugs. In spite of the small turn out everyone had a great time.

SQUARE DANCE CLASS GRADUATION
By Jerry Mendelson and Isana Seidcheck
We have graduated the 2009 / 2010 square dance class and 96% have applied for club membership. Counting Bill Gaarde, who took lessons at the Whirlaways, we have 23 of the original 37 who signed up in September 2010. We made this an event they will remember. We thank the 51 angels who attended the final class as well as the faithful who came all year. The students liked the club outfits and showed interest in ordering. We will be putting an order together soon. We will be placing an order for badges to replace lost or outdated ones, so if you need a new one let us know. Pictured above is our class graduates with Caller/Instructor Jim Randall and Class Managers Isana Seidcheck and Jerry Mendelson and Co-manager Kathy Knight. Thanks to all who made this class such a great success.
Pictured with Sandpiper Presidents Joan and Chuck Ades is 94 year old Sandpiper Mary Morris who attended the graduation and danced one tip.

DON MOHR AND ELIZABETH ALLEN'S ART SHOW
On Sunday, May 16, 2010 Sandpipers Don and Elizabeth held an art reception at their home. Featured was digital art by Don. After attending the University of California at Berkeley, Don graduated from the Art Center College of Design with a degree in professional art. Subsequently, he owned and operated a commercial photography studio in Hollywood. His work appeared in publications such as Los Angeles Magazine, Sunset, Newsweek and Time. Prior to 2000, Don worked exclusively with the camera. Since then, he has used the computer to edit and construct images which bridge the gap between photography and painting. Elizabeth and Don provided a beautiful array of refreshments which in itself was a work of art. Also attending were Donny and Fey, children of some friends and pictured to the right with some of Donny's art work. The statue, “Martha” was found by Don some years ago discarded in some bushes.
PALMQUEST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SQUARE DANCE DEMONSTRATION

On Monday, May 10, 2010, caller Jim Randall along with ten Sandpipers visited the Palmquest Elementary school for the Fourth Grade California Gold Rush Days. After about 100 Fourth Graders had assembled, Jim gave the students a brief history on square dancing and then had the Sandpiper square dancers dance a tip. Next the students were invited to try square dancing. A few came forward to dance and with teachers and some parents along with the Sandpipers squares were formed. Jim called tip and everyone had a great time square dancing. Jim invited the students again to square dance and this time all the students jumped up to join a square. The girls danced with girls and the boys danced with boys because at this age the girls and boys don't want to touch each other. Everyone danced for almost an hour and then Jim closed out the program with another tip of Sandpipers square dancing to a singing call. It was a great day of square dancing. Thanks to caller Jim Randall and Sandpipers Mike and Sandy Harris, Debby Gaarde, Lucille Brown, George Bramblett, Catherine and Jim Bowen, Becky Morris, John Gordon, and Fred Jackson.
