PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
I would like to congratulate the Nomination Committee for the wonderful job they did in selecting a great slate of new officers and committee heads to be presented at our Semi-annual General Meeting to be held at our home and garden. The committee consisted of Chairman Fred Jackson, Debby Gaarde and Nannette Caldararo. The list of nominees is found elsewhere in this newsletter. I am especially excited with their selection of a new slate because of the strength I see in their selection of people, but also in that it contains 11 Sandpipers that have never been on the board or held committee head positions before. This indicates that the Sandpipers will have great strength in the coming years. Any organization requires new thoughts and suggestions to continually improve. I see a bright future for the Sandpipers with this slate.
I hope that we have a large turnout at the General Meeting, Saturday, June 25, 2011. The meeting will be short and the fun will be long. It will be a Potluck with everyone bringing a side dish to share and something to put on the barbecue. There will be a self-guided tour of the garden, shuffleboard, pool table, games and Bocce Ball. This year we are adding Square Dancing on the lawn with Jim Randall calling. All those participating will earn a Grasshopper Badge. I hope to have the yard full of Sandpiper Grasshoppers.
Of the various positions on the board, I consider the team of Publicity and 2nd Vice President, who is also the Class Manager as extremely important. The class is the continuing “life blood” of the Sandpipers.
We are going to try something new this year to increase the size of the class. On August 20, 2011 we are going to again use our garden to have a garden party for your friends who you feel are good prospects for the September 2011 beginning class. It will be called a garden party with food and games; but, also, Jim Randall will call a square dance for beginners as a prelude to our class. This is only three months away so you should start canvassing your friends and acquaintances now so that we can have a yard full of potential class members. Make a list of those who you think might possibly be interested in learning square dancing and invite them to a “Garden Party.” Let them be surprised to find out there will be square dancing. Sounds like great fun. Happy Hunting.

SANDPIPER HALL OF FAME COUPLE FOR 2011
Congratulations Sandy and Mike Harris
Eighteen Sandpipers attended the Whirlaways “Hall of Fame Dance” on Friday, April 22, 2011. The Sandpiper Honorees for the event were our immediate past presidents Mike and Sandy Harris. Vic and Shauna Kaaria were the caller and cuer. The Kaarias did some duet singing to several of the square dance tips. It was very impressive. There were over 11 squares of dancers that attended this annual event.

Sandy and Mike Harris danced as preteens in the mid 1950's with the youth group “Bumble Bees” in Avalon, Catalina Island. This experience included a dance demonstration in Anaheim with the Red Wagon Squares in 1957. Each went their separate ways after middle school, pursuing school, careers and raising families until they met at a school reunion in Avalon in 1996. After marrying and remembering the fond times dancing as youngsters, they joined a square dance class in Ukiah CA, in 1999, but were told they could not continue because they had missed three of the first five classes and wouldn't be able to catch up. Not to be deterred they joined again the following year and also began round dancing. Immediately after graduation in June 2001 they were informed they would be presidents of the Ukiah Promenaders if they wished the club to continue. They remained presidents until November 2004 when they retired and moved to Carlsbad. Here they joined the Sandpipers becoming First Vice Presidents in 2006, elected as Presidents from 2007 to 2009, and have continued as board members to the present. They are also members of the Double SDs advance square dance club and enjoy round dancing. As a couple they treasure the many friends they have in this dancing family and appreciate the great social, mental and physical aspects of square and round dancing.

DANCING AT THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY (DEL MAR) FAIR 2011 (parking and admission is free)
Once again we will be dancing at the fair. This year's event will be on Sunday, July 3, 2011. Sign up with Donna Hawkins as soon as possible at 760-889-6861. The dancers must wear square dance attire, go in the Solana Beach Gate, park in the Green Lot in the back and check in with the Events Office. Square dancers are considered performers and are admitted free and the parking is free. After or before your scheduled dancing time, you can visit the fair exhibits and have lunch. This is a fun event and something square dancers do every year to promote square dancing.
THEATER EVENTS
Renny Dowling
There two interesting events in the summer months, PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS, in Laguna Beach and MOONLIGHT AMPHITHEATER in Vista. Both are really fun venues.
PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS- live actors and intricate sets combine to create images of well known artworks. It at first sounded very corny to me, but when we went to see it a few years ago I was thoroughly impressed. It is really something you ought to see at least once in your life.
Dates: July 7-Aug.31 8:30-10 pm Cost: $45 or $31 group rate if we get 22 people. To get the group rate we need to attend Sunday-Thursday. I think middle of the week is best. I am thinking end of July?
MOONLIGHT AMPHITHEATER - This is really a fun summer venue. People bring picnics and dine like at the Hollywood Bowl. Dinner is available at the restaurant but it is fun to bring a picnic (potluck) and wine.
Dates: July 28 - August 6 ANNIE. 8 pm. Even though this is in Vista and a small theater, they do a top notch performance. The lead actors are seasoned professionals. Cost: $22-$45
Please let me know if you are interested and in which venue, and which day/dates if your preference. I will arrange only one of the events, probably at the end of July. Both box offices will start single ticket sales (not season tickets) in about two weeks. That is when we would get the best seats.
APRIL 2011 VISITATIONS
CALIFORNIA STATE CONVENTION
Congratulations to all those Sandpipers who helped to show that the Sandpipers are a visiting club. Thirty-seven Sandpipers attended the California State Convention held the second weekend in April in Balboa Park. For many of us, it was our first time attending any activity outside of our own PSDA clubs.
PSDA STUDENT LEVEL DANCE
Twenty-five Sandpipers and three Sandpiper students attended the PSDA Student Level Dance at the American Legion Hall in Escondido. Ten of the attending group gathered at the Olive Garden Restaurant in Escondido before the dance. It was a great opportunity to get to know our students better. Hopefully we can continue this tradition for all student dances in the future. Kudos' to all.

GAME NIGHT
The April Game Night was a great success! Thanks to hostesses Ann Fleming and Renate Hausmann for such an enjoyable evening. Sixteen Sandpipers attended, including long time Sandipers Jerry and Isana who were in town from Arizona. Unfortunately, no one took pictures. Renny and Chuck were the winners.
You won't want to miss the May Game Night on Monday, May 2, 2011, hosted by Carol Burks at 7 PM at Sandy and Mike Harris' club house, 6750 Paseo del Norte, Carlsbad. Game Night is one of the best Sandpiper activities besides dancing.
