SANDPIPERS' NOVEMBER DANCE IS DARK

PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
It's The Best Time of the Year!
The Holiday Season is upon us. The days are getting shorter, The air is getting crisp, and smiles and laughter abound.
The fun and good spirits surround us. Ghosts and Goblins are everywhere as kids (of all ages) are donning costumes and heading off to parties. Soon families and friends will be gathering for Thanksgiving feasts. Brightly wrapped presents are starting to be tucked away
Most of important of all, there is a general feeling of “Goodwill towards all!” It is what has been called The Best Time of the Year!
We don't have autumn leaves in Southern California. Our most important signs of the season are the hugs and smiles that are everywhere, which reminds us of square dancing. The thing we have observed over the years is that when people first come in contact with square dancing the thing they mention most is the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. In our busy, hectic society, it is refreshing to take part in an activity where people take the time to enjoy each other's company and just have fun.
So while you are filling your calendar with the holiday parties, events, and get-togethers, don't forget your other “family,” your square dance family! Although we do not have a club dance in November, because so many Sandpipers and members of other area clubs are attending the RIVCO Festival in Indio that weekend, there are other dance opportunities in November, including our visitation to the Oceanwavers Anniversary Dance on November 4, the San Diego Association's Fiesta weekend,
Mark your calendar now for our Sandpipers General Meeting and pot luck preceding our Holiday Benefit Dance on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at St. James Parish Hall. The very brief general meeting starts at 5:30 PM, followed by a festive pot luck dinner. Bring a dish to share, cookies for the dance refreshments, and an unwrapped gift to donate to needy children (through St. James Church) if you can. Cap off the year at the New Year's Eve Dance. It is a great way to bring in the New Year. But get your reservation in early - attendance is limited, and it sells out every year.
We hope to see you in a square over the holiday season. And while we enjoy the busy holiday season, it is nice to know that when you square dance, any time is the Best Time of the Year!

SANDPIPER OCTOBER 2011 ROARING TWENTIES AND PIE NIGHT DANCE
NEW SANDPIPER PROCEDURES FOR HOSTING SANDPIPER DANCES
By Mike and Sandy Harris
Beginning in January, 2012 the Sandpipers will have the following procedures for our dances. We want to involve as many members as possible in our events and hope these will provide the opportunities our membership has been looking for.
1. The refreshments will be provided by the club members attending the dance according to their last name. Club members Abramson through Hausmann will provide refreshments at the January, March, June, and August dances. Club members Holt through Ziegler will provide refreshments at the February, May, July, and September dances. We will send out a reminder and the choice of what you bring is yours to make. As in the past all club members provide refreshments at the Anniversary dance in April, Pie night in October, Christmas cookies in December, and November is dark.
2. Two people will be assigned as “Hosts” to set up the refreshment tables, make the coffee, set out the water and lemonade, and maintain the refreshments appropriately throughout the duration of the event. They will clean up the kitchen area and store all club materials appropriately at the conclusion of the event.
3. Two people will be assigned as “Greeters” to assist setting up tables, chairs, and any other items necessary for the dance, and to welcome attendees at the front door as they arrive at the dance. If the people assigned as greeters are physically unable to assist in setup, they will secure two other people to complete this portion of the responsibility. Greeters are to arrive at the venue approximately 45 minutes prior to the event.
4. Two people will be assigned as “Sweepers” to assist in taking down and storing the chairs and tables, and attending to any other items necessary to return the dance venue to its pre event condition. This will require those designated for this task to remain at the dance until after its conclusion. Clean up is usually complete within 15 minutes of the last dance.
NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY
The Sandpiper's Square Dance Club is holding it's 14th annual New Year's Eve Party. It will be at St. James Parish Hall, 625 S. Nardo in Solana Beach. The cost is $19 per person, with Johnny Preston calling and Rey Garza cueing. Details are on the flyer. Please fill out the registration form, and Jim Bowen will get tickets to you. Jim will be sending all Sandpipers an email with a copy of the flyer which you can print out, complete and get to jim with your check. Tickets are available by PRESALE ONLY. Every year we have not only San Diego County dancers but visitors from out of state and Canada! This dance sells out so make sure to get your reservation in early.
SANDPIPER CLUB OUTFIT
If you wish to buy either or both a man's (medium size) and women's (medium size) club outfit from former members, please call Joyce Wayman at 760-918-9559. She and her partner are no longer square dancing.
NEXT BOARD MEETING
December General Meeting -- our next meeting will be the all-member club General Meeting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, December 10,2011 preceding our Holiday Dance at St. James Parish Hall. Please bring a dish to share for the potluck immediately following the meeting, and cookies for the dance.
January Board Meeting -- 7 p.m. at Chuck and Joan Ades' house, 1041 Passiflora Place, Leucadia, 92024. Board meetings are open to any club member who wishes to attend. Please RSVP to the Ades so they know how many to plan for, 760-753-6822.
GAME NIGHT
We would like to re-start the monthly Game Night. Please let Larry and Nancy Anderson know if you are willing to host a Game Night; if you have hosted one in the past, would you like to sign up for one of the upcoming months? We also would like someone to volunteer to coordinate the activity, which basically requires maintaining the calendar and signing up the volunteer hosts.
HOSPITALITY
The Hospitality Committee is going to initiate a new procedure beginning in January 2012. The plan will be presented at the General Meeting in December 2011, but the overall plan is in line with what many other clubs are currently doing. We will no longer sign up two couples to bring all of the refreshments and take care of all set-up and clean up for each dance; in the future the club roster will be divided in half, and any Sandpiper attending the dance for which their half of the alphabet is assigned will be asked to bring refreshments to share. The hall set-up, refreshment table, and clean-up activities will be assigned as three separate acitvities in advance so no one has to do everything, but every club member will be asked to help out a little at some time during the year.
NEW PSDA CLUB
By Judie Bagwell
The initial board meeting of the new round dance club, Dancing Shadows, was held on September 28, 2011. The Standing Rules and Bi-Laws of the club were established.
Dancing Shadows will become a PSDA club officially in January but will be included in the meetings of the board starting in October. The rules of the PSDA association require a three month operating period for the club before it can officially be a club under the PSDA.
Dancing Shadows board is as follows: Presidents, Chuck & Judie Bagwell; V. President, Myrna Baker; Secretary, Sherry Garza; Treasurer, Dennis Theile. Club dances will be held bi-monthly (even months) beginning in November on the third Sunday's of the month at the Escondido American Legion Hall from 3pm to 6pm and the door donation will be $6. Club membership is $10 which includes your badge. USDA insurance is $5.50 but this fee can be waived if you have another membership in a square or round dance club with which you pay insurance dues for within the California State Square Dance Council. Club dress has been adopted consisting of black and white attire in any print, solid, or arrangement that you choose. The club will offer arranged visitations to dances that are round dances or festivals or to square dances that offer extended pre-rounds where we will wear club dress.
The next dance will be Sunday, November 20, 2011 and the guest cuer will be Rey Garza. There will be a half hour workshop on “dance form” and a review of some new holiday dances that we can expect to hear cued at the December dances.
With some 100 students of round dance in North County it is vital that we form a group that can begin providing additional dance opportunities for the dancers to utilize their skills and have fun together.
SANDPIPER SQUARE DANCE CLASS
By Debby and Bill Gaarde, 2nd Vice-presidents and Class Managers
Most of our new Graduates are out dancing weekly. They are lots of fun and a great addition to our Sandpiper family. We currently has 13 new students in class. We will have a costume contest on October 27th; no class Nov. 10th; a recycle sale Dec. 1st before class and their first Student Dance will be December 11th. Please join us! Several experienced women are learning the “man's” part. It is a big help because we have a shortage of men. Richard likes it because he often is the only man in a square with all women! Please come Angel so we can bring all of our students through graduation to become active members of the club.
VISITATIONS
We had 17 Sandpipers visit the Circulators on Friday, Sept. 30. We had a great time dancing to Mike Sikorsky -- he even came onto the floor with a wireless headset mike, and joined in each square during the last tip, catching most of us by surprise when he suddenly appeared in our square. We captured a banner from the Circulators; hopefully they will send a group to get it back. We also pulled Mike over and got a group shot with him (sans Adrienne, who was round dancing and got overlooked when we pulled the group together).
Sandpipers attending were Adrienne Cooper, Richard Anderson, Loren and Barbara Miller, Christine Kiffman, Beth Abramson-Beck, new members Tim & Jan Motley, John & Renny Dowling, Kathy Knight, Larry & Nancy Andrson, Doris & Karion Fitzpatrick and Debby & Bill Gaarde. Above is our picture with Mike Sikorsky.

SANDPIPER POINSETTIA SALE
The Sandpipers will again be selling poinsettias as a fundraiser for the club. Last year we raised $252.00 for the club. These plants are of florist quality, direct fresh from the grower. Last year some people bought several to use to decorate their home and also to give as gifts to friends. The Sandpiper member will be responsible for collecting the money for their sales. We will be adding a couple of new features this year. We will also be selling the poinsettias to other clubs as well as friends. Also there will be a tour of the poinsettias on November 20 th at 1 PM. Chuck and Joan Ades will be giving the tour at their nursery, A & G Nursery at 2222 North Twin Oaks Valley Road in San Marcos. The tour will be about one hour long. The tour is open to all interested people. There will be many different colors and sizes of poinsettias for viewing. Among other things offered on the tour, suggestions will be made as how to lengthen the life of the poinsettia in the home. It is easy to keep the plant presentable until Valentine's Day or even to Easter. Also, orders will be taken at the conclusion of the tour. All orders must be placed by Nov 20 th. They can be placed by e-mail at chuck@agnursries.com or by phone at 760-753-6822. The poinsettias are to be picked up at the Ades' home on Saturday or Sunday, Dec 3 rd and 4 th from 1-5 PM.
