PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to bring in people for our new class. To my knowledge it is a record in recent history. Forty-four new people showed up our first night and were aided by 42 angels. Six new people showed up on the following Thursday in spite of a terrible parking situation. Thirty-one people paid for the class. More could possibly sign up next Thursday. Now the task at hand is to keep them going until graduation.
The class is our life blood. It not only brings in new people, but also, new ideas to our club. Our task now is to make their learning experience as enjoyable as possible. Angels are the main ingredient to accomplish this. While dancing with the students, just remember that you were once where they are now, be patient and helpful. Someone or something helped you to find square dancing to be an enjoyable experience. When you feel bored, smile, and you will feel better. Say something nice and you'll feel great.
We will soon be finding out how the students found out about our class. We had many things happening at the same time. The biggest success always goes to the club members talking to their friends and acquaintances. Additional things that were going on were ads in four different papers, TV spots on Time Warner, our club website, Craig's List and lots of flyers. Now we need to find out what things were most effective, so next years' class will exceed in size this year's success.
Happy Dancing, Chuck and Joan
BROADWAY TUNES/CAKE WALK DANCE
On Saturday, September 12, 2009, caller Jay Henderson came all the way from Bakersfield, CA to call our dance. Rey Garza cued the rounds. Thanks to Carol and Ray Ellestad and Susan and Mike Clark for providing the refreshments and to Mike and Sandy Harris who dressed up as Broadway characters from “Wicked” and provided the hugs. Becky Morris featured a “Cats” costume. When it came time to Cake Walk, the winners were Jerry Mendelson (who also baked the prize cake), Gene Henry and Lucille Brown.

SANDPIPER SQUARE DANCE CLASS
Second Vice-Presidents Jerry Mendelson and Isana Seidcheck
On September 10, 2009, we had 44 new dancers attend our first beginning square dance class well as 42 angels. All had a good time. At our second class on September 17, 2009 we had six additional new attendees and 40 angels. We now have a total of 31 new dancers who signed up and paid for the eight week session. This is the first year we provided information handouts after the class and the people we spoke to indicated they were helpful. We are using pin on badges for paid students rather than stick on because they are neater. We are putting together a notebook for future recruiting and class management. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Co 2nd VP Kathy Knight has been a great help and is ready for most anything and Marie Mastro and others are helping at the desk.
We want to thank all of the angels who came out to guide the students through the class. We're continuing the weekly event letter and intend to start one for the students in a couple of weeks.
NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY
Jim and Catherine Bowen
Sandpipers are again having our very successful New Year's Eve Party on Thursday, December 31st. This year we are co-sponsoring the dance with the Circulators. The donation is $19/person or $38/ couple. As we did last year, pre-rounds will begin at 8:00 PM and squares from 8:30 PM until midnight. The heavy hors d'oeuvres were a real success last year, so we will do that again. There will be an A-1 tip at 10:00 PM and an A-2 tip at 11:00 PM. We will welcome in the New Year with our usual toast. This year we have an international caller, Gary Shoemake, and Rey Garza cueing.
Please make your reservation early! Jim has copies of the reservation flyer. The flyers will also be available at our classes and our dances. Pick one up, fill it out, and get it to Jim ASAP. With the Circulators also selling tickets to the San Diego clubs, we will sell out quickly. We, naturally, need to limit the number of tickets available and want to make sure all our Sandpipers can attend.
Larry and Nancy Anderson will be contacting you closer to the event to help with crock pots, some food, kitchen help and assistance with cleaning up and closing down at the end of the dance. Circulators will also be participating in bringing food, kitchen help and closing down.
Let's make this the best dance of the year!

BOARD MEETING
On Monday, September 21, 2009, 21 Sandpipers gathered at the ocean view home of Jerry Mendelson and Isana Seidcheck for the September Board Meeting. It was a beautiful evening with the sun setting over the ocean. There was a lot of discussion concerning the new beginning square dance class, recruiting new members and club fund raising. Pictured is President Chuck Ades, flanked by Secretary Dot Omens and Treasurer Jim Bowen. After the meeting, the attendees feasted on an array of refreshments. Thank you Jerry and Isana for hosting the meeting.
This month's Board Meeting will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 7 PM at the home of Larry and Nancy Anderson, 18950 Caminito Cantilena, #29, San Diego, CA 92128. Please call Larry or Nancy at 858-674-6886 or email larrya1994@aol.com if you plan to attend. All Sandpipers are encouraged to attend the Board Meetings.
BEACH CLEAN-UP DAY
Chuck Ades
On Saturday September 19, 2009, seven Sandpipers joined three other clubs of the PSDA in cleaning up the Buena Vista Creek in Oceanside. Originally the clean-up was scheduled for Torrey Pines State Beach, but that clean-up was taken over by the Surfriders. Those Sandpipers attending were Kathy Knight, John Gordon, Becky Morris, Mike and Sandy Harris and Chuck and Joan Ades. After trudging up and down several creek banks and plowing through lots of brush, we completed the task.
We all then went to Round Table Pizza where Andy Allemao joined us for two tips of square dancing. The restaurant was having a great luncheon buffet of pizza and make your own salad bar for $6.99. The restaurant has since asked for pictures of our dancing for them to post on their bulletin board.
