PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
At our last board meeting it was suggested that I am wearing the people out with so many visitations. With that in mind, I will be reducing the number of visitations in hopes that more people will be attending the visitations. We are required to make all PSDA dances visitations. The PSDA usually has one dance each month and sometimes two. I feel we should also attend other PSDA club's Anniversary Dances. If there is no anniversary dance in the month, I will try to concentrate on the dances with the popular callers or clubs that have our banner to retrieve. Hopefully, we will have attendance to the visitations equal to that which the Whirlaways do, 20-30 members attending. I will call for Club outfits at all the anniversary dances, not mandatory understand. I don't want Sandpipers not attending because they don't have a club outfit. The important thing is that you attend. The Sandpipers have been known as a “visiting club.” Let's keep it that way.
Speaking of visitations, a few months ago, the Double SD's presented us with the “lighthouse”. It has become somewhat of a “white elephant” to be gotten rid of as soon as possible. We are planning on honoring the Ocean Wavers with the lighthouse at their next dance. We will be bringing the lighthouse to their dance on the September 3, 2010 visitation and presenting it to them if we have two squares or more of Sandpipers attending the dance. Please, let's have a good showing so we don't have to continue carrying it around.
Most importantly, we have our new class starting on Thursday, September 9, 2010. Remember, our goal is to have 60 people show up. I realize this is a seemingly high number, but we did have 53 show up last year. Usually only about one-half of those attending the first class end up signing up for the class and go on to graduate. We need between 26 and 27 students to pay for the caller and the Encinitas Community Center. We just barely made it last year. I do hear encouraging words from some of the Sandpipers. Remember, most of the people are brought in by word of mouth. Also, be sure that you are always carrying calling cards for the class with you. Also call the people you have contacted to remind them about the class a few days before it starts. You might even give them a “save the date” call earlier.

SANDPIPERS FIRST NEW DANCER DANCE
On August 14 th, from 3:30 till 5:30, the Sandpipers sponsored & presented their first “new dancer dance.” The PSDA usually holds a new dancer dance each month. However, they didn't schedule one for the month of August. Checking with the Saint James Catholic Church where our regularly dances are held, it was found that we would be able to occupy their Parish Hall in the afternoon. It was felt that it was very important for all new dancers to have an opportunity to have a dance in August to improve their abilities at dancing. We opened the dance to all club members, not only our own, that wanted to attend the dance. Jim Randall agreed to call for the dance even though he had another calling engagement at 6 PM the same day. It's great having such a co-operative & talented square dance teacher so willing to help the new dancers. The Sandpipers board decided that our members could attend at no charge. The response was great. We had over 6 squares of dancers attend the dance, not only Sandpipers, but many other clubs were in attendance. There were enough Whirlaways attending that they recovered one of their own Banners. Jim did an outstanding job of calling. He not only had the men do the woman's part in “Tea Cup Chain” but also mixed it up so that two women & two men did the active part of the call. He kept the speed of his calling up, so that it challenged the dancers but wasn't beyond their capabilities. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time at the afternoon dance. After the dance, many of the dancers gathered at the local Panda Express to continue enjoying each other's companionship. Many of these afternoon dancers even stayed over & attended our regular dance that started at 7 PM. It was decided that it was a success and that the Sandpipers should do it again any month the PSDA doesn't sponsor a “New Dancers Dance.”
BACK TO SCHOOL, FIRST CLASS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2010
The Sandpiper beginning square dance class starts on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 7 PM at the Encinitas Community Center with our own Jim Randall calling/instructing. As we all know, our square dance class is the life blood of the Sandpipers Square Dance Club. Although we graduated 23 new dancers in May 2010, we have not seen most of these dancers during the summer. Many say they will be back to angel the class and we look forward to seeing everyone on September 9th. Our angels do not pay for the class, so it is a good way to brush up on basic square dance calls while helping new students learn how to square dance. Our long time Sandpipers have already brought many of their friends and neighbors to the classes. Now is the time for new Sandpipers to bring their friends and neighbors to the class. The first class is FREE.
SQUARE DANCE SINGLES
Anyone needing a square dance partner at a PSDA affiliated dance should square up and raise your hands with the index fingers crossed to indicate you need a partner. Other square dancers noticing you need a partner will fill in or the caller will help you find a partner.
HAWAIIAN NIGHT DANCE
Almost 100 dancers attended the popular Sandpiper Hawaiian Night Dance with caller David Mee and his wife Dawn cueing. The Circulator Square Dance Club showed up in force and instead of paying at the Sandpiper treasurer's table, the Circulators told the Sandpiper treasurers that Jim and Nancy Dillon would pay for their dance donation. As Sandpiper President Chuck Ades was making introductory welcoming remarks, Nancy and Jim came up with Hawaiian leis made out of dollar bills and presented the money leis to the Sandpiper Treasurers Catherine and Jim Bowen. Last time the Circulators visited the Sandpipers, they paid their donation fees with money that was buried in a box of sand. There was plenty of Hawaiian Mumu's and Aloha Shirts worn on a rather humid and warm evening. Thanks to Richard Anderson, Renate Hausmann and Nanette and Frank Caldararo for providing the welcoming hugs and to Bette and Will Childs and Nancy Anderson who worked in the kitchen.
SANDPIPERS COUNTRY & WESTERN DANCE and CAKE WALK CONTEST
Saturday, September 11, 2010, St James Parish Hall, 7 PM
Caller: Jay Henderson
Cuer: Bill Hale
Greeters: Peggy and Sid Mayo
Hosts: Virginia Holt, Becky Morris, Don Mohr and Elizabeth Allen
What is a Cake Walk? A Cake Walk is a game where the players pay one dollar to play. The players line up behind one of the four suits in a deck of cards. The caller then pulls a card from a regular deck of cards and those players lined up behind the suit that is pulled are eliminated from the game. The remaining players then can change suits and line up again or they can stay with the same suit. The caller then pulls another card. All players behind that suit are eliminated. The game continues until one winner remains. The winner is awarded a specially baked cake that is baked and donated by our own master baker, Jerry Mendelson.
